Life sometimes puts us in situations where we have to make tough calls, even if they’re the right thing to do.
One such moment came for a homeless individual who heartbreakingly decided to hand over their beloved dog, Hero, to a rescue. Despite the deep bond and love Hero’s owner had for him, they believed he deserved a life better than what they could provide.
Hero, unaware of why his owner parted with him, found himself lost and uncertain in this new transition.
Little did he know, the world had better plans waiting just around the corner.
Hero Meets His Forever Family
Meanwhile, Sarah and her husband were on the lookout to adopt a furry friend. When they discovered Hero’s story, they learned he was searching for a home after his previous owner said goodbye.
Deciding to foster him initially, they wanted to see if Hero was the right fit for their family.
The instant Sarah met Hero, she was smitten. Though she held back from telling her husband immediately, wanting to know how he felt about Hero before she expressed her own feelings.
“I knew instantly I loved him and I wanted him but I didn’t want to influence my husband’s decision,” Sarah shared with GeoBeats Animals.
Luckily, Sarah’s husband shared her sentiments, and the couple joyfully chose to make Hero a permanent part of their lives.
They provided Hero with plenty of love and patience as he adjusted to his new surroundings.
Gradually, as he felt more secure, Hero started settling into his new home.
Hero found his place with his new family, feeling cherished. He relished every moment spent with them, expressing his affection for the love they showered on him.
Hero’s aversion to exercise didn’t go unnoticed by his family.
“He hates exercise of any kind. He’ll get walked and then he’s done and he wants to go home and go back to bed,” Sarah mentioned.
Considering Hero’s initial years spent outside with his past owner, Sarah and her husband figured this was why he wasn’t fond of the outdoors. Sometimes, they employ a clever tactic—driving him a block away—to coax him into walking.
A Unique Connection
Sarah discovered Hero’s incredible emotional intellect one day when she was down after a hard day at work. As if sensing her mood, the loyal pup responded in a heartwarming way.
Hero licked her tears, scampered away, and returned with a bath mat.
This gesture touched Sarah deeply because the bath mat was what Hero used to comfort himself when in distress.
“He somehow connected how I was feeling in that moment and related it to his fear, then brought me what makes him feel better. Of course I just cried even harder,” wrote Sarah on Instagram.
The bond between Sarah and Hero strengthened over time.
Sarah counts herself lucky to have Hero as a companion, especially during some of her toughest times.
“I feel like Hero and I are connected on this level that I didn’t know was possible… I went through losing my dad and Hero was this constant thread of a little bit of good in some really, really bad days. He’s just pure goodness. He’s such an amazing gift,” Sarah expressed.
Living his dream in his forever home, Hero enjoys a life of happiness with his adoring humans and often shares glimpses of his joy on his Instagram page.
