Jaina and Ivy Spagis were simply aiming to enjoy a little snack when they drove into a coffee drive-thru in San Bernardino, California. They had no idea that they were about to embark on a mission to rescue a distressed four-legged friend.
As they drew near the service window, a large dog suddenly appeared before them.
This gray and white dog darted through the drive-thru, looking alarmed and out of place, her tail deeply tucked between her legs.
Intrigued, the couple noticed something hanging from the dog’s neck.
At first glance, it appeared to be a pair of pants knotted around her neck.
The Scared Dog Finds New Friends
Jaina and Ivy, who run Cats of San Bernardino, were no strangers to animal rescue and were determined to help the frightened dog.
They approached the dog cautiously, empathizing with the fear that was evident in her eyes.
They decided to call her Bette Davis, after noticing her desperate search for what seemed to be her family.
Though Bette wanted to believe in the couple’s kindness, her fear won out momentarily as she cautiously wagged her tail in retreat.
Even as they got closer, Jaina and Ivy continued speaking soothingly to Bette, gradually winning her over.
Once they were close enough, the dog realized that these humans meant her no harm.
Her trust was confirmed when Spagis bent down and Bette gratefully licked her hand.
Bette showed her newfound faith by rolling over for belly rubs, soaking up the affection as if she had never known such gentle touch.
Bette Heads Toward New Beginnings
The couple stroked her gently and moved her to a safe spot, where they treated her to a delicious whipped cream snack.
As Bette enjoyed her Puppuccino, her rescuers removed what turned out to be a sweatshirt from around her neck.
After she was finished, Bette willingly climbed into their vehicle.
The couple immediately took her to the vet, hoping a microchip could lead them to Bette’s family. Thankfully, she had one.
Sadly, upon contacting her owner, they learned that Bette was left behind when her owner moved and he showed no interest in reclaiming her.
“Unfortunately, upon contacting the owner today, we learned that he moved and left her, expressing no desire to have her back,” Spagis shared on Instagram in a heartfelt update.
Despite this heartbreak, Bette’s new friends were met with gratitude and warmth from her expressive blue eyes.
Finding Bette a Home She Deserves
The couple vowed to find her a loving forever home where she would always be cherished.
Though their rescue focused on cats, they found a kind foster family to care for Bette temporarily.
Within a week, arrangements were made to accommodate Bette at their rescue facility, bringing joy to both the caregivers and their furry guest.
Bette’s spirits soared, her body now full of energy and her eyes shining with happiness.
Although Bette’s perfect family hasn’t yet appeared, numerous applications have reassured everyone that a wonderful future awaits her.
Bette patiently waits to be embraced by someone whose love will be unwavering and genuine.
