Shelter staff find unexpected furry rescue under green tarp in parking lot

One stormy night in San Antonio left quite a surprise for SA Animal Care Services. Staff arriving early in the morning stumbled upon an unusual sight—a green tarp laid out in their parking lot.

With curiosity and a bit of worry, they made their way to the tarp. As they lifted the soaking wet cover, their hearts dropped at the sight they uncovered.

Tiny faces gazed back in sheer bewilderment and fear…

A Rainy Night’s Struggle for Three Dogs

Beneath the damp tarp were two German Shepherds and a petite Chihuahua locked in cages.

These three dogs had been heartlessly discarded amidst the harsh weather, left to shiver under that green tarp. They were completely bewildered, unable to comprehend why they had been abandoned by their people.

Lisa Norwood, serving as the public relations manager for the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, shared her thoughts with The Dodo

“When incidents like this occur, it’s both sad and frustrating for us. The thunderstorm’s intensity combined with the sound of traffic must have terrified them.”

On realizing the dire situation, the staff quickly organized a rescue, bringing the drenched and frightened trio into the shelter.

Once inside, they immediately warmed up the pups, providing them with food and water.

The German Shepherds received the names Peaches and Cyrus, while the little Chihuahua was called Gabby.

Embarking on a Journey to New Homes

Norwood explained to The Dodo, “Gabby and Peaches seemed calmer and easier to manage. Cyrus, however, was quite shaken and took a bit longer to adjust.”

Cyrus experienced significant distress, needing more patience and reassurance to overcome the ordeal.

San Antonio is grappling with a growing concern as animal shelters become overwhelmed with stray and abandoned pets. The city’s shelters are under intense pressure, housing more animals than they should.

On their Instagram page, they expressed:

“From scared pups abandoned in stormy conditions to chaos caused by roaming animals, our shelter faces a constant fight against pet overpopulation. This is a glimpse of the daily reality for our municipal shelter.”

Faced with space limitations, the shelter knew that the trio couldn’t remain there indefinitely.

Fortunately, Peaches and Gabby soon found loving homes.

Cyrus, needing additional time to heal, was relocated to German Shepherd Rescue of NY, Inc, a non-profit saving German Shepherds from potential euthanasia.

As shared by the GSRNY’s Facebook, Cyrus soon found his forever family too.

We’re thrilled these lovely dogs finally encountered their happy endings, ensuring they’ll never have to endure such abandonment again.
