Picture this: you roll out of bed one morning and are greeted by the sight of two pit bulls in dire need of nourishment nestled in your front yard.
The folks living there couldn’t believe their eyes—they found two emaciated dogs barely clinging to life.
Despite their condition, the dogs wagged their tails hopefully at every passerby, yearning for assistance. Quick to act, the concerned neighbors reached out for help, and soon a compassionate rescuer came to their aid.
No More Suffering
Joey was alerted about these starving pups wasting away in someone else’s yard, and he immediately made his way over to the location in California.
He couldn’t believe the sight—these poor dogs seemed to have gone without food for an eternity. Time was of the essence.
Sorting through how the pitties had been left there by their previous owner, Joey wasted no time rescuing them.
He shared with The Dodo: “It was getting really hot. But also, it wasn’t in the best area, so we really only had a few days to get a plan together.“
Joey provided them with food and some much-needed affection before hustling back to the shelter in California to garner more aid. The rescue team returned the following day, welcomed by the dogs’ overwhelming joy.
It was gut-wrenching to grasp that anyone could abandon such lovable souls.
With his partner Victoria, Joey loaded the dogs into their car, their eyes wide with curiosity and tails a flurry of excitement during the trip.
A Turnaround for the Better
Next on the agenda was a visit to the vet, where the pitties received a comprehensive checkup. True to their social nature, they immediately began scouting the area, eager to interact with other dogs.
The veterinarians rolled up their sleeves, administering the care and attention the dogs so desperately needed.
Thanks to the collective efforts, the pit bulls began to recoup their lost weight, dramatically altering their appearance almost overnight.
Now in fantastic condition and poised for adoption, Joey decided it was best to find the pups a foster home for the interim period.
The pit bulls, christened Oreo and Buttercup, soon found themselves in temporary homes thanks to local community members.
Oreo was taken in by Joey’s neighbor, while his friend Marissa embraced Buttercup. She explained, “The second that Joey showed me that dog, I knew I needed to reach out.“
Marissa lavished Buttercup with top-notch care. Despite her weight recovery, she was slightly underweight, so Marissa ensured she followed the best diet.
Buttercup Gets Her Happy Ending
Buttercup revelled in the care and tenderness showered upon her by her affectionate foster mom. To improve her adoption prospects, Marissa contemplated an added step.
Acknowledging the possibility that Buttercup might benefit from some training, she brought Rosie on board as a dog trainer.
Untrained dogs often have to return to shelters, so Marissa’s thoughtful decision was a game-changer.
As they spent more time together, Rosie developed a desire to adopt Buttercup, and Marissa couldn’t have been happier with the outcome.
Marissa shared her disbelief and joy: “I can’t believe that this poor, poor animal, was skin and bones, on the verge of death. She is going on car rides, she’s getting at-home baths. She is living her best life now.“
The current status of Oreo’s adoption remains unknown, but in the meantime, he has a loving foster home. Watching these two resilient pitties flourish is truly heartwarming, and it’s a blessing they’ve been given a fresh start.
