As a dog mom myself, just the mere thought of losing my furry friend breaks my heart.
Sadly, many dog owners have faced that dreadful moment. There’s one story that stands out about a couple whose beloved Chihuahua, Penny, disappeared, leaving them heartbroken.
While enjoying a walk, Penny was frightened by a passing cyclist and darted off, losing her way back to her owners, Liam and Kelly.
The couple tirelessly searched everywhere, determined to find her, but despite their efforts, Penny was nowhere to be found.
A Mission to Find Penny
Refusing to accept that she was gone, they sought help from Mandy Butler, an expert from The Lost Dog Trapping Team. Mandy mentioned there was a good chance Penny might return to where she last saw them.
Following Mandy’s advice, they decided to camp out in the woods where Penny had initially vanished, hoping she’d find her way back.
Butler highlighted that, when searching for a lost dog, it’s crucial to remain in one spot to avoid spreading scents that might confuse a missing dog.
Since Penny was scared off by the cyclist, they decided on a small plan to encourage her to come back.
The couple set up camp and fired up the grill, cooking her favorite treat—sausages.
They hoped the enticing aroma would lure her back, and so they grilled sausages for five consecutive nights, filling the air with the scent.
However, after five days without any sign of Penny, the couple decided to relocate their search efforts to another area.
A Turn of Events
In the midst of moving locations, Liam saw Penny sitting by herself in a field.
She was too terrified to recognize him and bolted away when he approached.
Despite more searching over several days, they teamed up with a dog trapping service to set up traps, hoping to finally secure Penny.
Penny actually encountered one of the traps but managed to escape once more.
“I was losing hope and felt really defeated,” Kelly shared with The Dodo.
Penny’s birthday arrived, making it even more painful for the couple, knowing she was out there alone.
Then, out of the blue, they received a remarkable phone call! A family had discovered Penny scratching at their door, seeking shelter.
Penny likely confused the home for her own since it resembled hers so closely.
This was truly an amazing birthday gift! Once Penny was home safely, Liam, who runs a tattoo supply shop, celebrated her return with a tattoo of Penny surrounded by sausages!
Welcoming Penny back included grilling sausages—no need for cake this time around!
“It felt like Christmas. I couldn’t sleep because I was so thrilled. [S]he was zooming around in excitement. It was like she finally got her sausage,” remarked Kelly.
