Dog saved from euthanasia for barking lands a new home thousands of miles away

Moose shows us that dogs from shelters can be absolute treasures!

This sweet Pittie, who had begun life in a difficult way, with a bullet lodged in her lung, had only one goal: to become everyone’s best buddy.

Sadly, Moose’s dreams of finding a forever home were almost cut short, as she was days away from being euthanized when Micky stumbled upon her tale.

A last-minute space in the shelter was what it took to delay her tragic fate, ultimately saving her!

Overcoming Misunderstandings

When Micky read about Moose, she acted swiftly. Realizing that the adorable Pittie was on the verge of being put down, she applied to adopt her without hesitation!

Moose made her way from Houston, Texas, to Virginia in five days, where she finally met her new life partner, Micky!

It’s heart-wrenching that the reason Moose was considered for “behavioral euthanasia” was simply because she barked at another dog.

“It’s incredibly sad because ‘behavioral euthanasia’ was the label they used, and all I could find in her notes was that she barked at another dog,” Micky mentioned to GeoBeats Animals.

Additionally, Moose had been shot and undergone an abortion in her past.

“She had been shot (discovered via an X-ray, and though it can’t be removed, vets assured us it’s not a danger), had heartworms treated when I first adopted her, and had an abortion,” Micky shared on Instagram.

Moose faced undeserved stigma and a terrible first-year journey, but Micky was determined to give her a brand-new start!

“I’m amazed that this dog, given the awful start she had, wants nothing more than to be friends with everyone,” says Micky.

Moose – The Sweetheart of the Neighborhood

Despite Micky’s initial thoughts that Moose might be a challenge, this lovely dog proved to be surprisingly easygoing! It was clear she had a previous owner because she was house-trained and knew the basic commands.

Micky was pleasantly surprised by Moose’s calm demeanor, which was the opposite of what one might expect from a dog marked for euthanasia.

Moose adored people and other dogs, and her eagerness to learn inspired Micky to train her as a therapy dog!

“Despite everything, she’s been an incredible dog, picking new things up every day. She’s made such progress and was the best thing to have happened to me,” says Micky.

As someone with mobility challenges, Micky was searching for a certified therapy dog, and Moose turned out to be a perfect fit! Her intuitiveness convinced Micky that training her was the right decision.

“Most nights, she sleeps by my legs, but on nights when I’m feeling really unwell, she’ll snuggle by my head,” Micky explains.

Currently, Moose is on her way to obtaining her OFA certifications, and it seems likely that this wonderful shelter dog will become a fantastic therapy companion!

Moose has been with Micky for over a year and a half, and their bond has only grown stronger. Their adventures together are endless!
