When a concerned individual heard unusual sounds coming from a garbage bin, they quickly figured out it was a distressed dog in dire need.
The person informed Tullahoma Animal Shelter, and rescuers David Reed and Chris Cabral were soon on their way.
The scene that greeted them upon their arrival was truly heartbreaking.
A Heart-Wrenching Discovery
Inside the dumpster was a small dog, enclosed in a crushed white trash bag, struggling to breathe and unable to bark anymore.
Although the situation looked grim, Reed and Cabral used a net to lift the bag out.
They urgently cut the bag open, and their hearts sank as the lifeless-looking puppy emerged.
“He wasn’t making a sound or even moving. When he started breathing, we immediately called a vet for emergency care,” recalled Cheryl Rhoads, the animal control manager at Tullahoma Animal Shelter, to The Dodo.
The pup, now known as Oscar, was hustled to a veterinarian, where he received essential fluids, medications, and a much-needed trim.
This little Yorkie initially weighed six pounds, but once the vets had sheared away the severe mats from his frail body, he weighed only four and a half pounds.
In a safe and nurturing place, Oscar’s health and spirit began to improve dramatically.
A New Beginning
While an investigation is ongoing to uncover Oscar’s tragic history, he isn’t up for adoption, though many have shown interest in him.
Fortunately, Oscar is now staying with a foster family committed to helping him regain his full health.
Oscar seems to be thoroughly enjoying his new life!
“Oscar has quite a personality. He loves to snuggle into blankets and sleep. He enjoys being held, but only when he feels like it,” Rhoads shared.
Despite not being fond of his medication regimen—which includes eye and skin treatments—Oscar relishes his cozy blanket retreats during nap times.
Rescuers are thrilled to witness Oscar transform from a pup barely clinging to life into a joyful and playful companion.
With hope, the investigation will soon conclude, allowing Oscar to find a loving forever home.
