It’s a bit easy for us humans to overlook just how intimidating shelters can be for animals.
We’re often focused on the dedication of shelter staff working tirelessly to ensure each animal’s stay is as pleasant as possible. Yet, their efforts can only go so far.
Every animal craves the unique attention that only a personal human can provide, even if it’s just a quick playtime session. That kind of interaction can transform their world.
Unfortunately, a pup named Lancer didn’t get to experience that for a while.
Searching for a Buddy
Just like any other dog, Lancer was hopeful his time at the shelter would be brief.
But after spending seven long months at City of Mobile Animal Services in Alabama, Lancer’s spirits began to wane.
Despite this, the optimistic pooch held onto his hope and decided to make a change on his own.
“Each time someone approached his kennel, he’d stick out his paw, hoping they’d hold it,” shared Mary Kate Hale, the digital media manager at City of Mobile Animal Services, with The Dodo.
When a potential adopter would enter the Alabama shelter, Lancer would make his way to the door of his kennel, hopping onto his back legs, and push as much of his body through as possible.
He’d wave his adorable paw, hoping someone would notice him and fall head over heels.
All this sweet pup really wanted was to join a loving family.
“Lancer’s known for his affectionate nature and love for peanut butter. Post-zoomies, he often catches a nap in a shaded spot, sprawled out like a frog,” Hale noted.
Good Things Come Eventually
One day, Lancer saw a volunteer nearing his kennel and did what he did best: put on his most irresistible face and slipped his paw through the bars.
Charmed by this act, the volunteer snapped a photo. Knowing the appeal of this moment, they shared Lancer’s story and picture on social media.
And, as expected, people couldn’t help but fall in love with him.
“Within a day of being shared on Facebook, Lancer caught the eye of his new dad, Nick,” Hale explained.
With just a glance at the photograph, Nick saw what a wonderful dog Lancer truly was, convinced he was the missing piece of his family puzzle.
After a face-to-face meeting, Nick made it official and gave Lancer the love and care he had dreamed of.
Now, in his new home, this adorable pup is thriving. His days are filled with play, snacks, and pure joy.
And the most heartwarming part? Whenever Lancer reaches out with his paw, Nick is always there to hold it!
