Sadly, it’s not uncommon to come across a dog abandoned on the streets, struggling to survive. It’s heartbreaking that those meant to care for them have lost their compassion.
But thankfully, there are still compassionate individuals willing to drop everything to assist an animal left alone in the harsh world.
This was exactly the case when a caring individual stumbled upon an abandoned crate at a Shawnee, Kansas intersection. Inside, there were 11 puppies, and seeing their plight broke his heart.
Rather than walking away, he sprang into action, eager to make a difference for these little ones.
Looking After the Puppies
This kind soul reached out to Great Plains SPCA (GPSPCA) for assistance. The rescue team was thrilled by his timely intervention.
“It is a fairly busy road, and they were rescued right before we got a massive downpour of rain in our area,” said Victoria Roland-Vaughn, GPSPCA’s social media coordinator, in a conversation with The Dodo. “They had nothing to protect them from the elements. No food or water …”
Once these little puppies arrived at their new shelter home in Merriam, Kansas, the team wasted no time attending to their needs. Because the puppies were vulnerable and the shelter housed several sick dogs, the staff took careful steps to shield them from potential illnesses.
Ensuring safety, they placed the pups in a special kennel away from any sick animals. Snug and secured, the puppies were finally at ease and quickly fell asleep.
While the tiny ones recharged, their rescue team was hard at work planning their safe futures.
A Community with Heart
Due to the risk of parvovirus, the puppies couldn’t remain in the shelter for long. The staff leapt into action, searching for kind-hearted individuals willing to foster these sweethearts.
They crafted an urgent Facebook post to shed light on the pressing nature of the situation.
“🚨 BREAKING 🚨 11 puppies dumped in a crate on the side of the road less than an hour ago,” they wrote. “All of these pups are filthy, exhausted from their ordeal, and immediately fell asleep once they realized they were safe.”
The shelter folks knew there would be community volunteers ready to lend a hand. And indeed, they were right, as six of the puppies quickly found foster homes.
The remaining five pups eagerly approached every shelter visitor, hoping to find a cozy home.
It didn’t take long before these remaining puppies also found loving homes. The shelter team was beyond thrilled with this outcome.
“Our community stepped up in a massive way,” Victoria shared, emphasizing that there’s still so much kindness in the world.
A Brighter Tomorrow
Each of the 11 puppies found a foster family, where they’ll stay for three weeks until they’re ready for adoption. Happily, these delightful pups are already doing well in their temporary homes.
“Now that these pups are in foster care, they are blossoming into the happiest puppies you’ve ever seen,” Victoria noted. “You would never know that they went through a terrifying few hours from how playful and loving they all are.”
It’s evident that these pups have a bright future ahead, and it won’t be long before each of them settles into a forever home.
In the end, this beautiful outcome was only possible because of the Good Samaritan who started it all, along with the many generous people who rallied to save these innocent lives.
